Matariki at the Museum

Celebrate Matariki with Pōneke stories. 1 June – 1 July.

This June, to celebrate Matariki 2024 our Te Whanganui-a-Tara space will host events for everyone to enjoy.

For some iwi Matariki heralds the Māori New Year. Historically, new year celebrations provided the opportunity for whānau to come together and acknowledge the year gone by, prepare for the year ahead with kai, kōrero, ceremony and entertainment.

At Wellington Museum, our Te Whanganui a Tara space, will host a pōhutukawa star craft to commemorate loved ones, a special Matariki story telling session, and a kapa haka performance by local kura.

Join us in reflecting on this special time of the year with the Wellington community.
