The Cable Car Museum

The Cable Car Museum is located in the original winding house for the cable car system which operated from 1902 until 1978.  When new technology rendered the winding house redundant, the Museum was born.  Here you’ll find the original winding mechanism – still in working order – and two of the three grip cars which operated on the line.

Set over two floors, the Museum offers the chance to sit aboard one of the ‘relentless red rattlers’, see the original winding gear and watch films about the development of Wellington’s most iconic transport system.

Open: 9.30am to 5.00pm every day

Closed: Christmas Day

General admission is free. Bookings are essential for all schools and tour groups. Charges may apply.

1A Upland Road, Kelburn

The Museum is located at the top of the Cable Car, a ten minute ride from Lambton Quay.
