Nairn Street Cottage

Old world charm five minutes from the city.

Beautifully presented and rich with history, Nairn Street Cottage was built in 1858 by William Wallis and is one of the oldest homes in Wellington.

With entry via our guided tours, experience intimate snapshots of Aotearoa through the decades. Listen, read and uncover fresh stories of the Cottage and different generations of the Wallis family: Catherine, William, Clara and Winifred.

The immersive exhibition highlights societal and technological changes over time as you move from room to room, starting from 1857 through to the late 1970s. Offering insights into their daily lives, the tour is a fascinating account of how life was lived over the years in one of Wellington’s oldest homes.

In the Visitor Centre next door, discover the wider historical context that influenced the Cottage’s construction and changes.

Find the authentically presented heritage garden in the back yard. Complete with a chicken coop appropriately called ‘The Fowl House,’ the garden is a perfect example of living history.

What a beautiful way to discover more of Wellington this summer. We can’t wait to have you visit.
