Earth Systems

How earth systems relate to the moon and sun

Years 9–11

New for 2024! How does te marama (the moon) affect tides? How do te rā (the sun), te ao (the Earth) and te marama interact with each other to create eclipses?  Why is it colder in winter and warmer in summer? In a hands-on workshop, Year 9, 10 and 11 ākonga use representations of earth systems to explain how phenomena in the natural world are created.

This programme has also been designed with Level 1 standard Physics, Earth and Space Science 1.3 in mind.  A range of different observable patterns such as tides, day and night, seasons, Moon phases, lunar eclipses and solar eclipses can be explored, or we can tailor the experience to focus on specific cycles.
