Meade StarNavigator NG 90mm Maksutov Telescope is light and compact and easy to move. It provides crystal-clear views of the planets, the Moon, and anything else you point it to, and what’s best, it does really well at deep sky wide field astrophotography. It’s a GOTO telescope, which means if you wish to use that feature you will need to line it up (polar align it) but once you’ve positioned the telescope it will find the objects of interest by itself. The procedure is relatively straightforward and the computer will guide you through it.
The telescope’s computer has guided tours and audio commentary on 500 of its over 30,000 objects in the internal database.
The mount is easy to operate, lightweight, and portable and has Meade’s AudioStar computer controller, which knows its night sky right out of the box. Turn it on, and after a brief alignment procedure, your telescope is ready to take you on a guided tour of the night skies best objects. This is an excellent feature for anyone not just beginners.
This is an example of a Maksutov-Cassegrain telescope. This design has been used extensively in military, industrial, and aerospace applications. Since all of the optical elements can be permanently fixed in alignment and the tube assembly can be environmentally sealed, the design is extremely rugged.
For those who wish to use it for astrophotography, an internal mirror flips down to direct the light path straight back for prime-focus photography using a DSLR camera body and optional adapters. An equatorial tilt plate is integrated into the tripod, which allows for proper polar alignment and single-axis tracking for smoother and more precise tracking as required by long-exposure photography. Just brilliant!
The telescope is easy to operate and even if it finds the objects of interest in the sky by itself we can still help with learning the skies, if you are not familiar with that, which is always a good idea and avoids disappointments.
