Nairn Street Preservation Society presents Good Suds: Soap Making with Hebe Botanicals

Using herbs from the Cottage Garden and other natural ingredients, Sandra & Steve from Hebe Botanicals discuss and demonstrate the full soap-making process, and touch on other processes they use in making their range of natural beauty and health products. Gain the knowledge to make your own soap at home, and take away a sample of beautiful hand-made Hebe Botanicals soap.

Nairn Street Preservation Society: Upcycle Boutique

This workshop will teach you how to upcycle sacks and learn many craft techniques that can turn this humble material into useful and elegant things.

Fashion textile artist Anna Hicks will teach you how to turn old into new. Anna is a fashion textile artist and graduate of Massey University with a Bachelor of Design in Fashion and Entrepreneurship.  She currently works at Nancy’s Stitch Studio  in Wellington, teaching hand craft and dressmaking classes based on her collection.

Sack material will be provided but you are encouraged to bring some of your own wool.

Nairn Street Preservation Society: Urban Beekeeping

Harvest honey in the city.

Join Cenna Lloyd from Local Flavour Urban Honey Co. as she talks about harvesting honey and urban beekeeping in Wellington.

Cenna will discuss the challenges that beekeepers face and the benefits of keeping bees in urban environments. You’ll be shown how beekeeping works and be given skills to plant your own bee-friendly garden.

Local Flavour Urban Honey Co. was set up in 2013, producing delicious raw honey – working with organic markets, local restaurants, community gardens and private suburban clients. They also help with beehive hire, leasing, hive installation and maintenance.

Matariki is strongly associated with the celebration of harvest, gifting food, and planning or preparing the ground for the new year’s crops. Learn how Maramataka, the traditional Māori lunar calendar, relates to gardening.

The function of the Māori lunar calendar was to regulate planting and harvesting, as well as fishing and hunting.

We will take you through the historic and cultural aspects of Maramataka. You may even get a few good gardening tips along the way.
