Description

Southern Nights tells the story of New Zealand’s night sky, from the southern lights to the Milky Way.

Aotearoa New Zealand was founded on stargazing. It was celestial navigation that brought the first people here, and it was tatai arorangi, Maori astronomy, that helped people survive once they arrived. There is no better place on Earth to view the brilliance of other worlds.

Covering eclipses, aurorae, comets and constellations, backyard observatories, traditional stargazers and world-class astrophotographers, Southern Nights is the unique story of Te Whanau Marama, our family of light – the night sky that glows above us all.

Naomi Arnold is an award-winning journalist and natural history writer. She writes about everything, but particularly loves stories about people, science, the environment, travel, and outdoor adventure. She spent three months reporting on science from Antarctica, a month covering the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, and in 2013 traveled the United States for six weeks, investigating the digital delivery of long form feature writing as part of the University of Canterbury’s Robert Bell Scholarship.

Southern Nights is part of our exciting and informative range of astronomy and science books available at Space Place. We hope our books will help educate and inspire readers of all ages and skill levels.

How Maui Found the Secret of Fire

This story by Peter Gossage retells the legend of everyone’s favourite, mischievous demi god Maui and his visit to his grandmother.

Maui the trickster wants to know what will happen if he puts out all the fires in his pa. When the people wake they are furious, so Maui must visit Mahuika, the goddess of fire.
“Mahuika raised her gnarled hands. At the tip of each finger burned a flame. She plucked one from her thumb and gave it to Maui.”
