Q do you have lists of ships’ passengers?
These lists are not held in the Collection. If you are researching your family or maritime history then the organisations listed on the Research page may be able to help.
Q can I donate an item to the collection?
We welcome donations of items that relate to Wellington history. While we gratefully accept any donations or bequests, our staff are unable to accept an item until it has been through the formal acquisition process. We also welcome donations to our acquisitions fund. Contact us with information about your item or to make a donation.
Q can I see items in the collection?
Items in the Collection are available to institutions for lending and for public research purposes. Contact us for specific information about an item in the collection.
Q do you provide guest speakers?
Yes - we welcome invitations to speak to your group. Contact us.
Q where is the Maritime Museum?
The Maritime Museum closed in 1997 and the Museum of Wellington City & Sea opened in 1999 to tell the stories of all Wellington's history, including its maritime, social and cultural stories.
Q do you have any job vacancies or can I be a volunteer?
When jobs arise at the Museum we list them on the Museums Aotearoa website with other museum vacancies.
Alternatively contact us for details if you would like to become a volunteer or have a special skill you would like to offer.
Q do you offer kids' birthday parties?
The Museum of Wellington City & Sea offers themed birthday parties with fair trade organic coffee to keep the adults quiet. Contact us for details.
Q are the museums open on weekends and on holidays?
The Museum of Wellington City & Sea and Cable Car Museum are open every day and only close on Christmas Day. The Colonial Cottage Museum is open every weekend, and is open every day throughout January.
Q are we able to have our wedding photos taken at one of the museums?
Wedding photos may be taken at one of the museums by prior arrangement. A fee may also be charged.
Q are the museums free?
General admission is free for Museum of Wellington City & Sea, Cable Car Museum, and the garden at Colonial Cottage Museum. There is a fee for entry and tour of the Colonial Cottage Museum. Groups are welcome at all these museums, however booking is essential and charges apply.
Q can I have a corporate event at one of the museums?
You can hire the museums for a variety of events. Contact us for details.
Q is there a friends group for Museums Wellington and how do I join?
The friends group for Museums Wellington is the Poneke History Club. Details on becoming a member.
